One Third

2020

“Where does a small change make a big difference?”, was the starting point for this project. Immediately my mind jumped to space travel. Optimizing for weight and volume is crucial in interplanetary travel, for obvious reasons. Every gram of additional mass can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional cost. With the prospect of humans forming habitats on mars, how do you design user objects for such a context? Gravity on Mars is about one third of earths’, surface temperatures vary greatly and radiation levels quickly rise to lethal intensities. So how do you make a chair to put in your ‘living room’ on Mars? In this project I try to design for a very specific context, with a focus on weight, strength and compact transport .
