Moss Tower

2020
The benefit of having houseplants seems undisputed by many. It helps clean the air and is generally a treat to the eye. In most households today it makes up a significant part of home decoration. Interestingly a different more primitive life-form is largely unexplored in the context of home improvement: Moss. With far better air cleaning properties, it would seem to be ideal for air filtration. The reason moss is still largely missing in our living rooms, lies in the fact that moss grows very slowly and needs a host surface to properly grow on. Moss doesn’t have roots but instead relies on moisture that is concentrated on the host surface or moisture in the air. This is why, in nature, moss is often seen concentrated in cracks in rocks or trees. Water tends to concentrate in those cracks and direct sunlight doesn’t reach it as well, which means the water evaporates slowly. With this in mind, what would it take to make a perfect host structure if you will for moss to be kept inside and thrive? The result is a stackable ceramic structure which is able to have moss grow in its grooves.
