With this research artist Mette Sterre proposes to create a wearable soft robotic body mask that functions as a transformative octopus skin. It will change shape, texture and colour. This project was a collaboration between Mette, the Technical University, Miles Luxembourg and me. In a prototyping and creation burst of less than 2 weeks spread over 2 months, we created a prototype suit which changes shape and colour. The objects consists of many inflatable cavities which can be inflated deflated or filled with liquid to achieve the appearance changing effects. It has been an intense and intimate collaboration between the three of us, culminating in several performances and a 2 month display in 38CC in Delft. Subsequently, a short documentary movie was made about the project and presented at Dutch Design Week 2023.
My responsibility mostly centered on the sample-making, parametric and algorythmic pattern generation, building the mold, developing the electronics/programming.
